Residential renovation

We all have to start somewhere. My mom’s apartment in the historic Watergate complex in Washington, D.C. had not been updated in decades. Along with faulty appliances and flickering lights, the galley kitchen was unnecessarily closed and, like the trash compactor in Star Wars, felt like it was getting smaller every day. Removing the back wall opened up views of Luigi Moretti’s curvaceous courtyard and the Potomac River beyond. Sleek, simple tweaks and finish selections based on historic context contributed to a calmer, more enjoyable center of the home.
