backcountry privies
Tasked with updating the privies along the popular Long’s Peak Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park, our design build team worked with the National Park Service to redesign and construct four high-altitude structures. The project constraints encouraged a delicate balance of lightweight prefabricated construction and environmental consciousness. Thin steel plate moment frames and site-filled gabion walls provided the necessary stability and allowed for the structures to blend into their surroundings. Recipient of a 2019 AIA Small Project Award and Architizer A+ 2019 Award winner. My team’s original project, the Gem Lake Privy, was put on hold until 2024, when we returned to construct the structure made from 30 charred wood beetle kill timbers harvested from recent Rocky Mountain National Park fires.
